One of the reasons I enjoyed Nadesico so much is the believable romance between Yurika and Akito.

At the time Nadesico was made it was very unusual for anime romances to have a resolution—especially a happy one. In most cases the couple you wanted to get together would be separated by tragedy or last minute plot twists. Sometimes they'd just walk away from each other for no reason (cough, Escaflowne). Bah!

Ashitaka doesn't take up much space on the big Ghibli cel but I couldn't resist because it's so rare to see him looking happy.

This cel went for a bargain price even for a tiny image. I found out why when I received it: there's a big paint chip. I was heartbroken, someone was careless handling the cel. I Photoshopped the chip out for this image but you can see it stuck to the sketch.

In Rumiko Takahashi stories, nothing's ever simple, that's a key component of the fun!

In this case a complex chain of events has caused Akane to become stronger than Ranma, and that will never do. Eating the berry will return her to normal (or at least as normal as she ever is) but will she take it?

I love Ms. Takahashi's work but I wish she'd let her characters show more affection for each other. This is a nice moment that says a lot about their relationship -- Ranma doesn't want Akane to be stronger than he is, but he also wants what's best for her. Akane enjoys having the upper hand for once but she trusts Ranma (though she'd never admit it) and wants things to go back to the way they are "supposed" to be.

Of course there are also those troublesome side-effects of super strength...

The straightforward relationship between Masahiro and Akiko is one of the main reasons I enjoyed Shonen Onmyouji: they like and respect each other from their first meeting. There's no anime-style angst and no drawn-out love triangle or other nonsense.

I love Ashitaka's mask-and-haystack look, it's just so odd. It's got to be itchy and uncomfortable, and it's certainly not anything you could call camouflage. In fact, it's incredibly conspicuous.

If you saw Ashitaka like this, you'd immediately think, "Wow, what a suspicious guy!" Still, he makes it work somehow. I guess some people have it and some don't.

I've noticed that Hayao Miyazaki is very partial to the shade of red on Ashitaka's hat. It recurs again and again in his films -- look for it in Spirited Away among others.

If you go to a Japanese bath house and this guy offers to help you, watch out. Ask Soji for a list of bath accessories and you'll get answers along the lines of toasters, piranhas, and toxic bath salts. Not to mention his old favorite, the traditional katana.

I love all Sojiro cels but this one has a special place in my heart. Not only does it include the matching background (notice the watercolor shadow behind him) but it's the only Seta Sojiro cel I've ever seen where he's not wearing his nerdshirt under his kimono.

I paid way too much for this cel but I just could't resist it. Like all Rurouni Kenshin characters, Soji is drawn a little differently in every episode; this is my favorite style. The cel even has Soji's patented "death is my business, and business is good" smile.

I've watched countless hours of anime but when it comes to Harmless Looking Villains no other character even comes close...

This is Spike, a character from an anime almost nobody has seen called Eden's Bowy. It's quite a strange series, of a genre I can only describe as "kitchen sink." It has gods, cyborgs, floating cities, and just about anything else you can imagine. There were quite a number of series like it made in the late 1990's, shows where (often pretentious) ideas and comedy combined in an odd brew.

Like most shows of its kind, Eden's Bowy doesn't make a lot of sense. The story changes direction constantly, to the point of feeling like it could really use some Adderall. Still, it has its moments, and if you're willing to ride along it can be fairly entertaining.

There are certain shows that feel like missed opportunities because they take the easy path. For me, Last Exile and Eden's Bowy are two such shows. They both pass up some obviously interesting story paths in favor of familiar anime cliches.

Even given its weaknesses, I enjoyed Eden's Bowy and I'll probably watch it again someday. It's a worthwhile "deep track" if you're looking for something that isn't a harem comedy or a ninja snorefest.

I like Eden's Bowy's character designs, though they're quite mutually inconsistent. I'm especially taken with Spike's character design -- I always wonder why so few anime characters have patterns on their skins (beyond the obvious cost of drawing such patterns).

This is Yahiko pretending to be the mysterious prince. You can tell by his eye color, the prince's eyes are green.

Needless to say the background is incredibly non-matching. The Rising Sun flag was not much of a feature of Meiji Japan...

Awesome pan cel of Vash in the engine room of a train. The matching background really makes this cel sing, though I also like the kid assistant's expression. On top of that, Vash seems happy for once.
