Passing of the Boar God |

San standing beside the recently-deceased Boar God. I really like her pose in this cel, the way she seems to echo the boar's shapes and colors. It's an example of Studio Ghibli's attention to detail that San always wears natural colors while Ashitaka and the townspeople wear bright man-made colors.
I was happy to get a cel showing San clearly wearing Ashitaka's stone knife... San is incredibly rare and expensive, I'll buy almost any San cel I can find, but this one is a favorite. The blood on San's clothing (and her injuries) is delicately painted onto a separate layer, giving a translucent "liquid" effect that doesn't show nearly as well in the scan as in person. |
