Too many funerals

This cel is an example of how different Nadesico is from other animes (for better or worse). After the destruction of a space station, Yurika and Jun spend an episode rushing from one funeral to another, dressed in the costumes of many different (and mostly imaginary) religions. They are carrying out the last wishes of the station's crew, recorded by the crew themselves.

Most animes have very high casualty rates, but there's rarely any sense that the victims are real. They're just numbers, lost behind cool-looking explosions. Nadesico is the only anime I've ever seen that actually addresses this issue, and typically, in a way that's both funny and poignant.

Nadesico shows the dead as individuals, with their own hopes and dreams (not to mention last wishes), and it shows Yurika crushed beneath the weight of too much mourning. There's nothing she could have done to save them, but duty compels her to rush around in strange costumes, paying respect to the souls of the lost.
